Harriman Diddy Trophy Gala
The Hinckley Diddy squad traveled to Charnwood Leisure Centre in Loughborough, the hastily changed venue following the demise of St Margaret's baths in Leicester, on Saturday 19th February 2000 to compete in this very competitive trophy competition.
This was the first Diddy gala of the new millennium giving the new crop of nine year olds their first competitive swim.
What an interesting evening with the nine year old girls (Rebecca Clarke, Rebecca Moore, Hannah Ruck and Penny Stokes) showing they're potential for bigger and brighter things and the rest of the girls also performing well with Kelly Rawlings, Katie Whitford and Rebecca Burrows all taking first places. The boys had a rather indifferent evening but we did however see Dorran Burton in sparkling form with a win and a second place.
We started very brightly with Kelly Rawlings (10 years 25m Freestyle) winning the very first race, this was followed with some credible third and fourth places until Dorran Burton (12 and under 50m Backstroke) took second place and Katie Whitford (10 years 25m Breaststroke) with our second first place. After twelve events we were sitting in third place on 32 points, the team in first place had moved well ahead but the but for the remaining places could not closer with only three points separating second to fifth place.
We were not to well over the next twelve events with bunch of third and fourth places and just three second places Daniel Hope (11&U Backstroke), Girls 9 years (4x25m Relay) and Kelly Rawlings (10&U 25m Backstroke). These results left in a rather poor fourth place on 61 points some seven points behind third place.
The next twelve events did not start well but then we had three first places in five events Dorran Burton (12&U 50m Freestyle), Mixed 9 years (Freestyle relay) and Rebecca Burrows (11&U 25m Butterfly). This was complemented by a second place from Katie Whitford (10&U 25m Butterfly). These strong results moved us into third place on 99 points.
Despite a very good second place from Lynzi Garner
(11&U 25m Breaststroke) we went into the final race in fourth place one
point behind third. The final race
was the 16x25m freestyle cannon, two swimmers from each age group, with youngest
starting first. The four nine year
olds (Rebecca Moore, Hannah Ruck, Andrew Wainscot and Richard Addison) could not
have given us a better start with them leading when they handed over to the 10
year olds. The remaining age groups
could not match the nine year olds performance and we slowing fell back to third
place nearly 25m in front of fourth place.
This result gave us the extra point we needed to come equal third with
Braunstone.

These results are all very encouraging but you may have noticed above that it is mainly girls filling these top three places with the boys only taking three of the twenty five events. Boys you can do better I know you can.
